7. ALINA CARMINA - PAPARUDĂ

A traditional Romanian song. In Romanian folklore, Paparudă is the deity of fertilizing rain that is invoked in times of drought through song and dance. Paparudă is also the girl wearing a skirt made of vines and small branches, who sings and dances while people sprinkle water on her, in order to invoke the deity and bring the rain.

Original Romanian lyrics:

Paparudă rudă
Sai în sus și udă
Udă cu cofița
Ca să crească vița

Paparudă rudă
Sai în sus și udă
Udă cu găleata
Ca să crească roada

Paparudă rudă
Sai în sus și udă
Udă cu ulciorul
Să crească feciorul

Paparudă rudă
Sai în sus și udă
Udă cu cănița
Să crească fetița

English translation:

Paparudă rudă
Hop and bring the rain
Fill the cups with water
So that the vine may grow

Paparudă rudă
Hop and bring the rain
Fill the buckets with water
So that the fruit may grow

Paparudă rudă
Hop and bring the rain
Fill the jugs with water
So that the boy may grow

Paparudă rudă
Hop and bring the rain
Fill the mugs with water
So that the girl may grow
